Collagen maturation

A critical component in collagen maturation is the principal terpenoids extracted from the Centella asiatica plant. These include asiatic acid, madecassic acid, and asiaticoside. Centella asiatica has been documented to aid wound healing in a large number of scientific reports. The most beneficial effect appears to be the stimulation of maturation of the scar by the production of type I collagen and the resulting decrease in the inflammatory reaction and myofibroblast production. The laying down of collagen is influenced by Decorin which acts as a spacer and prevents lateral fibril fusion. This decorin-like effect appears to be produced by the extracts of the plant Bulbine frutescens. The result is a regular shape and diameter to the collagen.
